The project is interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and includes several exhibitions that use visual tools as a way of scientific analysis, as well as an educational programme. It presents the phenomenon of the artist-researcher and the research scientist.
The project provides an opportunity to take a broad look at the centuries-old history of the region, to realize the importance of climate change in In the Arctic and to see the problem of the coexistence of nature, man and technology in a new way.
The project is part of the decade of science and technology and is timed to coincide with the completion of the second year of the great scientific expedition, a joint endeavour of the siberian branch of the russian academy of sciences and nornickel. Siberian scientists studied fragile ecosystems in the krasnoyarsk territory, the kola peninsula and trans-baikal region, as well as on a section of the northern sea route and river ports on the yenisei river
The arctic is an amazing land inhabited by endemic species of animals and plants, preserving the memory of prehistoric times – the ice age – and at the same time rapidly developing modern industrial production. Urban clusters are located there, next to which not only wildlife but also the traditional millennia-old culture of the arctic indigenous peoples are neighbours.
The project unfolds a retrospective of four centuries of scientific and resource-seeking expeditions to explore the vastness of the arctic, which gave the world not only scientific discoveries, but also artistic revelations. It tells the story of how the boundary between science and artistic creation is blurring, bringing us back to the era of leonardo da vinci, when the language of artistic analysis became part of scientific methodology.
It has the works by contemporary artists — representatives of science-art, who explore modern ecosystems, problems of industrial areas, the state of water, the fragile ecosystems of the arctic.
The exhibition presents works made with the help of modern technologies, but referring to the primitive and primordial, calling for the preservation of biodiversity and learning from nature to interact with it. Lara fedotova, marina pakhomova and eva nikonova explore the state of water, which «remembers» all changes. Mila vvedenskaya shows the origins of the primordial world, where man and the surrounding world represented a single whole — a world of absolute harmony. Vera petrova’s installation «ministry of eternal life» reflects on the mechanisms of adaptation in an aggressive industrial environment. Dmitry minaylov explores the life of plants in the complex conditions of a changing climate and other natural circumstances of a constantly transforming environment, thanks to which new ecosystems and new communities of living organisms thrive.
The exposition of the project is placed on several sites. One of them is the museum old english court of zaryadye park. The chambers of the xvi-xvii centuries became a space for installation of material and artistic evidence of the winter camp of russian pioneers of the xvii century, discovered not so long ago in the lower reaches of the yenisei river near the port city of dudinka.
The exposition of the old english court will present engraved and handwritten maps, drawings that recorded the landscape of newly discovered territories, analysis of the world of wildlife in graphics, watercolours and travel diaries, ethnographic, topographical and biological observations of scientists and artists. The phenomenon of the artist-researcher and polar scientist will be fully revealed by the personalities of a. A. Borisov (1866-1934), a student of ivan shishkin and arkhip kuindzhi, the first artist in the arctic circle, one of the first popularisers of the arctic theme in the world of fine arts; n. V. Pinegin (1883-1940), an artist, photographer, filmmaker and writer, together with the polar explorer g. Ya. Sedov (1877-1914), who made the first scientific expedition to the north pole in 1912-1914, the author of the first colour photographs of the arctic; s. G. Pisakhov (1879-1960) — writer, ethnographer, storyteller and artist, famous for stories from the life of pomors; a. P. Lekarenko (1895-1978) — student of ivan bilibin and nikolai roerich — explorer of taymyr, and tyko vylka (1886-1960) — the first nenets artist, who accompanied the expeditions of v. A. Rusanov and g. G. Roerich. A. Rusanov and g. Ya. Sedov (1909) expeditions in the arctic seas. The album of expedition drawings by tyko vylka, presented to nicholas ii, aroused great interest of contemporaries.
At the onset of the twentieth century, russian artists developed an interest in the cultures of the far north, vividly represented in the activities of the masters of the union of youth, including kazimir malevich, pavel filonov, olga rozanova, and mikhail matyushin. The success of polar expeditions and personal contacts between avant-garde artists and the ethnographer and linguist k. M. Rychkov, who presented an exhibition of arctic artefacts in the imperial capital, caused a wide public resonance. It was reflected not only in the fine and decorative arts, but also in everyday culture: in the works of the imperial porcelain factory, decorative panels and embroideries, in the glass bottle of cologne «severny», created in 1911 by the firm «brokar» according to malevich’s sketches. In the exposition of the old english yard, the audience will see crockery designed by kazimir malevich and nikolai suetin and the very same bottle of cologne «severny».
In the halls of the state darwin museum viewers will see an extensive collection of expedition diaries and field drawings from the expeditions of scientists, zoologists and ecologists, including v. A. Vatagin (1883-1969), n. N. Kondakov (1844-1925), n. A. Formozov (1928-2009), brothers v. M. And y. M. Smirin (1931-1989) — representatives of russian science of the last century, who recorded the unique biodiversity in the process of transformation against the background of climate changes.
The exhibition hall of the stroganov university of art and design is presenting the works of students and graduates of the departments of «art ceramics», «graphic arts», «media design» and «interior design», regional branches of the university: abramtsevo art and vasnetsov industrial college, college of design and decorative arts of the stroganov university, as well as graduates of the taimyr college, preserving the traditions of indigenous culture.
The stroganov university is one of the recognised centres for the development of the animalistic genre, thanks to the mentorship of v.a. vatagin in the 1960s. It was vatagin who first introduced compulsory classes in the zoo, so that bionics became the most important discipline for the formation of both designer and artist. The exhibition presents the works in metal, wood, bone, leather and fur in the tradition of the artistic crafts of the indigenous peoples of the peninsula.
Design studies of the arctic environment, arctic cities and settlements have given rise to a number of bold projects, experiments and searches of student youth in the direction of eco-design, one of the objects of which was the urban environment of the town of dickson on the extreme sea coast of the taymyr. Guests of the exposition will be able to see these works in the exhibition hall.
“The project is interesting in its complexity, bringing together three different institutions with one theme that is interdisciplinary and cross-cultural in nature. The project provides an opportunity to take a broad view of the centuries-old history of the region, to realise the significance of climate change in the arctic and to see the problem of the coexistence of nature, man and technology in a new way. In addition to the exhibition, the project includes a broad scientific and educational programme with lectures, master classes, thematic documentaries and feature films.”
The project partner was nornickel, a mining and metallurgical company operating in the polar regions. Nornickel implements a comprehensive environmental strategy: it not only develops modern environmentally friendly production facilities, but also works with scientific institutions on an ongoing basis to obtain the latest knowledge about ecosystems and their biodiversity in the industrial environment.
The company initiates annual large-scale research expeditions involving russian scientists, local historians, and employees of nature reserves. The expeditions result in a comprehensive environmental assessment of the arctic regions. Dozens of scientific institutes and hundreds of specialists study the level of industrial impact on the environment, develop the best nature-saving solutions to restore and maintain ecosystems, and forecast various changes.
In addition, these studies replenish the banks of up-to-date scientific knowledge about the russian arctic, contribute to scientific discoveries and provide an opportunity to test the latest scientific research methods.
Nornickel supported the idea of the eco-educational project «researcher and artist: art in expeditions» as the first systematic attempt to reimagine scientific research in the arctic through cultural context and artistic imagery.

«Arctic Birdwatching — combining the beautiful with the useful»
February 15, 19:00. State Darwin Museum
Speaker: Elena Valova Position: Research Associate of Pasvik Nature Reserve
Arctic Birdwatching — combining the beautiful with the useful. How photography helps ornithologists on expeditions and how it can be used in civil science.
Currently, the direction of bird photography has become very popular among both amateur birdwatchers and professional photographers and ornithologists. But not everyone knows that this can be not only a personal hobby, but also bring huge benefits to science, even if you are not a scientist. Photographing live objects helps specialists capture various aspects of their lives from a safe distance, without disturbing them, and further analyze them. Images of amateur photographers help scientists clarify the spatial distribution of not only common, but also rare species. To do this, you need to upload all the photos, regardless of their artistic quality, to various databases – this way they will become available to scientists who can help not only with the correct definition of the species, but also use the information obtained in their work. And it happens that the image can also be used to identify some interesting features that were not previously known or confirmed. Another important aspect of photography is the ability to show the beauty of the world around us, especially to children. After all, our task is not only to study, but also to preserve, and for this you just need to teach to love and appreciate the native nature of each person. Both photography and birdwatching are the best helpers in this!
